Samsung, among the world’s largest e-business

Sunday, January 31st, 2010

Samsung Electronics in South Korea in the history of the first companies to get a “100 billion won in sales, operating profit of 10 billion won,” performance, becoming the world’s leading electronics laptop battery companies. But the British “Financial Times” reported on the 29th, said: “In the long term, Samsung Electronics, a lack of innovation will undermine the gains. Computer scientists have warned, said: “Samsung Electronics is now lower our guard, if the future is likely to face even greater crisis.”

Beat Siemens and Hewlett-Packard

Samsung Electronics 29, said total sales last year and operating income of 136.29 trillion won, respectively, and 10.92 billion won. Compared to 2008, sales and operating income increased 15% and 91%. At the end of the exchange rate of reference ($ 1 ₩ 1164.5) basis, sales of 117 billion U.S. dollars, exceeding the 2008 sales of the global electronics industry has two best Siemens Germany (sales last year of 109.8 billion U.S. dollars) and the U. S. Hewlett-Packard (HP, 1146 billion).

In addition, Samsung Electronics chip communications, digital media and the LCD screen as the four main areas, or at least realized 1.38 trillion to 4.13 trillion won in operating profit 6Y270,75UYF.

An executive from Samsung Electronics, said: “In the first quarter of this year because prices of high memory, marketing cost reduction and air-conditioning project in the high season, season and so on, and better performance than the previous quarter. Plans to start the second half of this year compared with the global competition was the first mass production of DRAM to 35 nanometers.

Some people worry about “looming crisis”

There are predictions that if Samsung guard down, they faced a crisis. British “Financial Times” On the day, said: “The success of Samsung has the speed and agility. However, the lack of innovation in the future May Harm profitability. “Samsung’s development is different from the respective player and iPhone (mobile Internet) and Sony and Apple phones since the introduction of color screen mobile market after the market leading products are dating, coverage of foreign media’s view of this situation, highlighting the weaknesses of Samsung.

Samsung Electronics in recent popular smart phones on the market are also disadvantaged. Samsung last year, the share of global handset market by 20.7%, but the third quarter of the market share of smartphones last year by 2.8%. In contrast, Apple’s iPhone accounted for a product on the world market share of smartphones by 17.0%. Finnish Nokia and RIM in Canada respectively, occupy the market share of the smartphone of 37.8% and 19.6%.

Samsung Electronics in sales depends largely on the chip, while operating income of the chip easily based on fluctuating market conditions, it is also regarded Samsung “Achilles heel”.

Information and Communication Policy Research Institute (KISDI) the responsibility of a researcher Kim Min-sik, said: “At present, equipment, Samsung, step by step improvement, this model has its limits. Even if he eventually becomes the first, if Apple, Google and other companies introducing innovative products new concept to change the course of competition in one fell swoop, we all have to start from scratch. ”

Different manufacturers Samsung and Apple

Such accusations, Samsung Electronics, said: “We recognize that, like the iPhone can not produce such high performance products, but Apple is to concentrate all efforts into a single product with the innovation of the company, while the Samsung’s most comprehensive e-business, the two can be compared. “Samsung Electronics has also said that the costs of our R & D accounted for 9% of turnover, the standards are not low.

Competing companies LG Electronics mobile phone unit, the level of operations, said: “From gas business, part of the attention of Samsung Electronics in the production” of manufacturing companies, while Google, Apple wins with creative activity. Compare apples to blame Samsung and other innovations result qualified technical staff will not be accused of invention. ”

Other experts pointed out: “If Apple and Google to change the model of mobile phone market, Samsung will soon be able to go beyond, but the chip market leader Samsung, Apple and Google absolutely impossible to catch up. “

Nokia’s fourth-quarter profit rose claimed Apple to fight back

Friday, January 29th, 2010

Nokia’s stronger-than-expected fourth-quarter profit of substantial growth to investors by surprise. The company claimed that with Apple’s smart phone battle is to fight back.

Reported that Nokia’s share price soared by 10%. There are indications that the company in the growing smartphone market is being recouped. The well-known products Inspiron 1501 battery,Inspiron 1520 battery on the market, including Apple’s iPhone and the Canadian Research in Motion’s BlackBerry (BlackBerry).

Nokia said that in taking measures to adjust the product lineup, the company’s share of the smart phone market from 35% in the third quarter increased to 40% in the fourth quarter.

Nokia CEO Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo (Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo) said that the recent introduction of smart phones (such as the flagship model N97 and N900) have proved to be successful, and promised to pay further efforts to increase this year’s market development efforts.

He acknowledged that 2009 was “interesting” year, which is characterized by decline in the mobile phone market, as well as Nokia’s struggling to adapt to rapidly changing market, the difficult restructuring of the occasion.

But he said the fourth-quarter results showed that the Group’s strategy has started to produce results. “We can head back in,” he told the British “Financial Times” said.

Nokia’s impressive performance to help, where to grab a little limelight from Apple. Wednesday Apple released the iPad tablet computers, smart phones this product intended to fill a vacancy between a laptop Inspiron 1521 battery,Inspiron 1525 battery,Inspiron 1526 battery.

Apple CEO Steve Jobs (Steve Jobs) said that the company from mobile devices (such as the iPhone and iPod) had earned more than the Nokia, which makes the two companies increasingly hostile struggle between the more exciting. Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo of Jobs shrugged off the suggestion, saying it was not true, based on overly broad definition of mobile devices based on the. “We are still by far the largest mobile companies,” he said.

Nokia’s fourth-quarter net profit rose nearly 65% to 948 million euros (about 1.325 billion U.S. dollars), easily exceeding Reuters (Reuters) expected by analysts surveyed 533 million euros. Nokia shares rose 9.9 percent to 9.91 euros.

Intel Core i3, i5 laptops make inroads at retailers

Tuesday, January 26th, 2010

Laptops based on the new mobile Intel Core i3 and i5 processors from Dell laptop battery and Acer continue to roll into retailers like Best Buy at sub-$700 prices. But don’t expect Apple to offer deals like this on its upcoming MacBook Pro.

The mobile i5 and i3 offer a significant step up in performance. Tech Web site AnandTech said the i5 processor delivers “the single largest performance improvement we’ve seen from a new mobile processor in years.”

And retailers have been quick to haul out systems based on the freshly-minted chips. This week, Best Buy is offering a Dell deal for $649. Typically, laptops PA3191U-1BAS built around new Intel mainstream mobile processors are priced well above $700.

The Best Buy Dell system–which follows an offer from Staples for a Dell Inspiron Core i5 17-inch laptop with Windows 7 for $649–has a 15.6-inch display and a Core i3 running at 2.13GHz. Like the Staples system, it goes for $649.

Dell Inspiron 15.6-inch laptop at Best Buy:
Operating system: Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit)

Processor: Intel Core i3 i3-330M processor (2.13GHz)

Graphics chip: Intel Graphics Media Accelerator HD

Memory: 4GB

Hard disk drive: 320GB hard drive

Optical drive: multiformat DVD+/-RW Drive

Display: 15.6-inch WLED high-definition widescreen

Weight: 5.3 pounds

Price: $649
Staples is also offering a 17-inch Acer (AS7740-5691) for $649 based on the Core i3-330M processor with specifications similar to the Dell system, including 4GB of memory, a 320GB hard disk drive, and Windows Home Premium 64-bit.

Apple PA3191U-1BRS is expected to follow suit with Core i5 MacBook Pros but don’t expect the company to deign to Dell or Acer price points. Any replacements for current aluminum Apple MacBook Pro systems will likely follow its current pricing scheme, which starts well above the $1,000 price mark.

And though the Core i3 and i5 processors offer improved Intel graphics silicon, Apple, during the last year, has decided to forgo Intel graphics chips in favor of more powerful processors from Nvidia and ATI. By comparison, the Dell and Acer systems above come with Intel graphics only.

For IBM, the business with Apple was a financial sinkhole

Sunday, January 24th, 2010

It’s been four years this month since Apple laptop battery announced it would drop the PowerPC architecture and switch to Intel’s x86 design. One person involved in the back-and-forth between Apple and IBM at the time provides some insight into why it happened.

When Apple made the watershed announcement in June 2005 ending its longstanding relationship with IBM and Motorola, Apple CEO Steve Jobs attributed the switch to a superior Intel roadmap.

“Looking ahead Intel has the strongest processor roadmap by far,” Jobs said in a statement at the time. “It’s been ten years since our transition to the PowerPC, and we think Intel’s technology will help us create the best personal computers for the next ten years.”

One oft-cited reason was that Apple didn’t believe it could get the requisite performance per watt from processors being supplied by IBM and Freescale–formerly Motorola’s chipmaking arm. Translation: Apple was worried about IBM’s and Motorola’s ability to deliver competitive processors for laptops Inspiron 9200 battery. (Update: Another reason often put forward is that Apple simply wanted to be able to run Windows.)

A former IBM executive, who worked at IBM at the time and was involved in discussions with Apple, offered his perspective in a conversation we had during dinner at a recent technology conference. Let me emphasize that this is one person’s opinion, not necessarily the gospel truth. I will not publish his name or title.

While he acknowledged the public reasons put forward by Apple, there was more to it–not surprisingly–than that. The upshot: Apple wanted better pricing, according to this person.

Apple was paying a premium for IBM silicon, he said, creating a Catch-22. IBM had to charge more because it didn’t have the economies of scale of Intel, but Apple didn’t want to pay more, even though it supposedly derived more from an inherently superior RISC design as manifested in the PowerPC architecture.

Here’s what Jobs said in 2003: “The PowerPC G5 changes all the rules. This 64-bit race car is the heart of our new Power Mac G5, now the world’s fastest desktop computer,” Jobs said in a statement. “IBM offers the most advanced processor design and manufacturing expertise on earth, and this is just the beginning of a long and productive relationship Inspiron 9300 battery.” (Sounds suspiciously similar to what Jobs said about Intel after Apple made the switch.)

Despite the praise heaped on IBM’s technology in 2003, Apple believed, by 2005, that it couldn’t compete on cost, according to this person.

For IBM, the business with Apple was a financial sinkhole because the company had to invest a lot of money in chipsets, compilers, and other supporting technologies but could only take a small percentage of the overall PC processor market, he said. So, in the end, it was impossible to make money.

Why only a small piece of the processor market? Apple insisted on double sourcing (IBM and Motorola). So, from the start, this left IBM with about half the market it could have had. This, he said, was an enormous financial burden. Paraphrasing the ex-IBMer: Intel was a single company with the lion’s share of the market. While two companies–IBM and Motorola–had to divvy up a much smaller share of the market, while still investing, individually, tremendous amounts of money. And Apple played one against the other, according to this person.

IBM had been concentrating on delivering high-performance, single-core PowerPC processors, this person said. (Presumably by ratcheting up the gigahertz rating on single processors. The goal was to exceed 3GHz.) But when Intel, as part of the discussions with Apple, showed a dual-core (multi-core) processor roadmap, Apple reconsidered this strategy, according to this person. (Though IBM did deliver multi-core PowerPC designs for the Mac as shown in the graphic, these were not the same kind of multi-core designs that Intel was proposing. )

Interestingly, IBM had hoped to amortize the cost of PowerPC on Cell, the PowerPC-based chip design now used in the Sony PlayStation, some IBM severs, and IBM Roadrunner supercomputers. Big Blue was hoping to move Apple to Cell and then get the economies of scale there, according to this person.

Can parallels be drawn with Advanced Micro Devices and its struggles to compete with Intel over the last few years? Possibly. Very few chipmakers have the multibillion dollar coffers to fund the R&D and manufacturing necessary to be a leader in a major chip market, let alone stay competitive. Witness AMD last year going to the brink and then saving itself by spinning off its manufacturing operations.

And Apple chose Intel in 2005, not AMD, and has stayed with this single source for its Mac line since.

Dell: Sleeping Giant or Tech Dinosaur?

Thursday, January 21st, 2010

Investing in Dell Inc. (DELL) stock used to be very profitable. Texas-based Dell laptop battery revolutionized the way consumers purchased personal computers. Dell was in the right place at the right time, offering customers the ability to pick and choose what they wanted in their computers. This approach was rewarded by investors; Dell was once one of the highest fliers on the Nasdaq. Anyone who bought the shares in 1988 when they first went public and still holds them today is up about 20,000%.

Recent years, however, have not been kind to Dell Latitude D810 battery. The stock is down about 60% in the last five years. Founder Michael Dell returned to leadership in a move many thought would be an elixir for a lost company. The longer-term picture was soon discovered to be just as dour as previously thought. Consequently, Dell’s stock has been languishing.

Large tech companies often transform from growth to value stocks as their businesses mature. Investors understand why Dell has been left in the dust by the likes of Apple (AAPL). What investors won’t tolerate is the fact that mature tech names like Intel (INTC) and Microsoft (MSFT) ended at or above where they were five years ago while Dell has lost more than half its value. At Hewlett-Packard (HPQ), Dell’s chief rival, shares have more than doubled.

But things may be changing. The most recent news is encouraging for the once high-flying Dell. Dell is redirecting its creative energy outside the plain-vanilla PC business. They recently purchased Perot Systems for $3.9 billion in a bid to generate more consulting and services revenue. In addition, Dell showcased a tablet PC prototype earlier this month. The company can bankroll such projects with more than $13 billion in cash. Bottom line, Dell is looking for more in technology and has the means to back their ambition.

Dell stock has climbed more than 10% since early December. Look for even more upside if Dell Latitude D820 battery breaks above $15.25. There may be room to capture a 2-3 point move as it transitions into the previous trading range. For a short term gain in a solid stock, go with DELL. For a longer-term value play in tech, go with cash-rich but still growth-minded DELL.

Intel’s Core i7 processor will first appear in fast gaming desktop PCs

Tuesday, January 19th, 2010

Intel’s Core i7 processor will first appear in fast gaming desktop PCs, as reviews arrive confirming its speed advantage over the Core 2 architecture laptop battery.

The first comprehensive reviews hit Monday leaving little doubt that Intel’s Nehalem chip architecture will greatly surpass anything Intel offers now.

Reviews cover the Core i7-965 Extreme Edition used with Intel’s “SmackOver” motherboard, aka the DX58SO Extreme.

Core i7 processors expected to launch later this month include 2.66GHz (Core i7-920) and 3.20GHz (Core i7-965) versions. Prices will range roughly between $285 and just under $1,000.

Dell said Monday it is expecting to launch four desktops that include the new Core i7 Intel processor technology. These desktops will range in price depending on the accompanying technology 6Y270,75UYF, starting at $949. Timing will be tied to Intel’s official launch of Core i7.

Other PC makers expected to bring out boxes include Gateway and Hewlett-Packard.

What is Nehalem/Core i7 exactly? The architecture will scale from two to eight processor cores, have faster chip-to-chip communication (Intel calls this technology QuickPath), do a better job of adjusting performance levels to suit power needs, and have a higher level of integration (more logic will be built directly onto the processor die).

Other salient features include more scalable memory (each processor will have its own dedicated memory), the ability to do more stuff simultaneously (up to 16 threads with simultaneous multi-threading), and new instructions to increase efficiency (called SSE4.2 instructions).

And who’s going to buy i7 systems initially? Here’s what CNET Reviews editor Rich Brown says: “We don’t expect mainstream users will adopt Core i7…at first, at least until the motherboard prices come down.”

Brown continues: “In the short term, it will benefit gamers and digital media types. The initial systems will be gaming oriented.” (See these ExtremeTech gaming benchmarks.)

“We ran our own tests C1295,GD761 and found the flagship $999 Core i7-965 Extreme chip is the new fastest game in town,” CNET Reviews said.

The i7 identifier will apply to the first crop of high-end desktop processors. Other identifiers will come later that will complement the i7. There will be a separate black logo for the highest-end offering called the Extreme Edition. Model numbers will differentiate each chip.

Nvidia said that some notebooks with its chips continue to have “failure” issues

Sunday, January 17th, 2010

Nvidia said that some notebooks with its chips continue to have “failure” issues, in a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission on Wednesday.

In the Form 10-Q filing, Nvidia stated that though it does not continue to see “abnormal failure rates” in systems using Nvidia products,” some notebooks are still affected laptop battery.

Specifically, Nvidia said: “We continue to not see any abnormal failure rates in any systems using Nvidia products other than certain notebook configurations. However, we are continuing to test and otherwise investigate other products,” Nvidia said, adding, “there can be no assurance that we will not discover defects in other MCP or GPU products.” (MCP stands for Media and Communications Processor; GPU stands for Graphics Processing Unit.)

On July 2 of last year, Nvidia announced it was planning to take a one-time charge to cover costs associated with problems with materials used in certain versions of its laptop graphics chips. Subsequently, a $196 million charge was recorded in the second quarter of its 2009 fiscal year to “cover anticipated customer warranty, repair, return, replacement and associated costs” with the problem Latitude D430 battery.

In the 10-Q filing, Nvidia cited a “balance of $145.7 million associated with incremental repair and replacement costs from a weak die/packaging material set.” and “$31.2 million for the three months ended April 26, 2009 in payments related to the warranty accrual associated with incremental repair and replacement costs from a weak die/packaging material set.”

Nvidia paid or incurred $50.3 million against the original “warranty accrual” in its fiscal third quarter and fourth quarter 2009, such that the remaining balance of the “bump-crack accrual” (defect) was $145.7 million at the end of its fiscal fourth quarter, according to Nvidia.

Nvidia is also grappling with insurance companies over payments to PC makers for GPU failures, according to reports.

As early as 2007, Hewlett-Packard listed laptop models affected by the graphics chip glitch. In August 2008, Dell also listed affected models. And Apple said in October that it would repair faulty graphics chips.

In the 10-Q filing, Nvidia also stated (some cases were cited in previous Nvidia filings) that “in September, October and November 2008, several putative consumer class action lawsuits were filed against us, asserting various claims arising from a weak die/packaging material set in certain versions of our previous generation MCP and GPU products used in notebook systems Latitude D505 battery.”

Most of the lawsuits were filed in federal court in the Northern District of California, but three were filed in state court in California, in federal court in New York, and in federal court in Texas, Nvidia stated. “Those three actions have since been removed or transferred to the United States District Court for the Northern District of California, San Jose Division, where all of the actions now are currently pending.”

Some of the lawsuits, such as “Inicom Networks, Inc. v. NVIDIA Corp. and Dell, Inc. and Hewlett Packard,” include Dell and HP.

Why Apple’s tablet will be successful

Thursday, January 14th, 2010

It won’t be the 10-inch touch-screen display that drives adoption of Apple’s rumored tablet computer, but rather the availability of apps for the device, according to one laptop battery industry analyst.

Gene Munster, senior research analyst at Piper Jaffray, said in a research note to clients on Monday that initial tablet successes will come from the confidence consumers have with Apple’s mobile platform. It is widely expected that Apple will use an iPhone-like operating system on the tablet Inspiron E1405 battery, enabling consumers to utilize existing apps.

Recent media reports that Apple is asking developers for super-sized versions of their apps is helping to fuel speculation that existing apps will work on the tablet.

An interesting tidbit of information in Munster’s research note is that he expects Apple’s tablet to compete well in the netbook category. While the Netbook focuses on its portability, Munster sees the tablet focusing “more on apps, entertainment content (from the iTunes Store), and Web surfing.”

Apple Inspiron E1505 battery reportedly chose Innolux, a subsidiary of longtime manufacturing partner Foxconn, as the supplier for the 10-inch displays.

Kodak and Samsung digital camera patent technology exchange settlement

Tuesday, January 12th, 2010

Kodak Monday announced that it has reached a settlement agreement with Samsung Electronics laptop battery, the two sides will exchange a digital camera patents.

Last month, the U.S. International Trade Commission found Kodak Samsung infringed two patents. This time to reach a settlement, the two companies can use each other’s patents.

Kodak said that Samsung will pay royalties, but gave no details.

Kodak in November 2008 to the United States International Trade Commission to prosecute, saying that Samsung VGP-BPS8,VGP-BPS8A,VGP-BPS9,VGP-BPS9/B and LG camera phones manufactured in violation of its own patents.

United States International Trade Commission to resolve the main body of such a patent dispute, because the body can stop problems with parts imported products.

Samsung and Kodak will jointly issued a request to the termination of the International Trade Commission patent infringement processing.

Last year, early in December, Kodak and LG announced a similar settlement agreement.

Acer can replace the Dell PC into the second

Sunday, January 10th, 2010

IDC, Gartner and iSuppli market research agencies such as the latest statistics released simultaneously to show the world’s second-quarter PC shipments continued to decline, but the rate has been gradually shrinking. In the vendor rankings, Acer’s market share of nearly forced Dell, Gartner’s figures also show that only 0.1 percentage points between the two gaps.

According to Gartner, worldwide PC shipments in the second quarter of 68.1 million units, down 5 percent from a year earlier, but better than the original estimate of 9.8% decline is better. In fact, Gartner raised second time in June this year when the global PC market forecast, and forecast fourth quarter PC market will begin to reverse the positive. Gartner analyst Mika Kitagawa said the higher than expected performance this quarter, can be regarded as PC market recovery signals. Asia-Pacific region in particular and the United States. However, the Middle East and Africa are still likely to remain slack.

The IDC had forecast 6.3% decline, the results of the actual decline 3.1%. IDC said the first quarter, global PC shipments on the higher than expected. In the second quarter once again exceeded the original estimates, but also allow PC market relief. IDC analyst Loren Loverde noted, the data shows that at the end of the market may return to positive growth.

Ranking in the area vendors, Acer and Dell continue to narrow the distance, it seems likely to replace Dell’s second ready position. Gartner’s figures show that Acer’s shipments in the second quarter of this year compared with same period last year increased 34.2% to reach 9.196 million units, the market share jumped from last year’s 9.5% to 13.5%, only 0.1 percentage points less Dell’s. Contrast, Dell has fallen 17%, from last year’s 11.16 million units reduced to 9.259 million units, a market share of 13.6%. HP’s first location is relatively stable, the market share increase from last year’s 18.1% to 19.6%, to 13.371 million units shipped.

The IDC, Acer’s shipments increased 23 percent compared with last year, the market share from 10% to 12.7%, Dell is a negative growth of 17.1% from 16.1% market share decreased to 13.7%, the two companies differences remaining 1 percentage point.
